Sony has just confirmed that a "future platform" is in the works to follow the PlayStation 3!

Sony's executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato made the announcement today in conference call to investors. When asked to explain increased research and development costs, he answered, saying:

"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life," he said, "but this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there."

Kato's comments come at exact opposites with Sony Computer Entertainment boss, Kaz Hirai's. Back in March, Hirai said, "a near-future PS4 or next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now." Hirai then went on to stress that Sony wasn't "even at the half-way point" in PS3's lauded 10-year plan.

The current console cycle is definitely longer than previous ones, but with the Wii 2 (aka Project Cafe) expected to be unveiled soon at E3, and rumors of top-tier publishing partners receiving prototype dev kits of Microsoft's new Xbox, that may just be the end of this cycle, and the beginning of the next gen consoles!

I bet it has a camera on it.

I wouldn't be surprised. Might have some voice control similar to kinect's new features. Perhaps a more powerful system with the "install other OS" feature back in :carling:

I read that maybe a possible year of the release could it be the 2016 since the PS3 lenght of life its 10 years...so we must wait!

I knew the 10-year plan wouldn't follow through.

Really cant wait for this! if they do it well, and actually add in what most ps3 users want like....i dont know...Cross game chat....and other various things the ps3 needs and no w@nkers try to hack it like when PSN went down then it should be fine

Carmack: Xbox 720 and PS4 will be "10 times more powerful"

The developer id Software usual, with Epic Games, to mark the passing of each generation graphics engine. John Carmack has already squeezed the current hardware with their games and especially with the upcoming Rage, and dives into the pool to predict that the next Xbox and Playstation will be ten times more powerful than current models and will be in a couple of years .

"The next generation will come soon.'ll Be here in a couple of years. It will be ten times more powerful than this," says Carmack on Eurogamer. The fundamental challenge will propose the next generation of graphics is how to provide even more impressive when the current engines and provide unprecedented visual finish.

Officially, the future of Xbox 720 and Playstation 4 not know anything. Unofficially it has been speculated as to the development of a new system of Microsoft as a desktop platform than Sony. For the group of Redmond, it is rumored that the console could arrive Timesplitters 4 under the arm to show for the first time at E3 2012.
