Sony has just confirmed that a "future platform" is in the works to follow the PlayStation 3!
Sony's executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato made the announcement today in conference call to investors. When asked to explain increased research and development costs, he answered, saying:

"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life," he said, "but this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there."
Kato's comments come at exact opposites with Sony Computer Entertainment boss, Kaz Hirai's. Back in March, Hirai said, "a near-future PS4 or next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now." Hirai then went on to stress that Sony wasn't "even at the half-way point" in PS3's lauded 10-year plan.
The current console cycle is definitely longer than previous ones, but with the Wii 2 (aka Project Cafe) expected to be unveiled soon at E3, and rumors of top-tier publishing partners receiving prototype dev kits of Microsoft's new Xbox, that may just be the end of this cycle, and the beginning of the next gen consoles!

I really dont see what else they could do to a console to make it better than the Ps3, only two things come off the top of my head and that would be 3D gaming and basically their own version of the Kinect.
If anything they should just take the Ps3 and build onto it, instead of building above it.

Finally, this will be major improvement in graphics, who knows maybe we can run for ex MAG 2 with cod4 graphics, and other games will have wayy better graphics than anything we can ever imagine, or they will just add pc graphics, because we all know that pc graphics were wayy better than console graphics, just look at crysis, maybe they're working on those graphics.

there's no point, it's not as if they can improve the graphics that much as the ps3 already supports the best resolution you can get from a tv. i suppose you could make it faster and games more realistic, but that's kinda down to the makers of games. at the minute the only new console should be a wii 2, but that would just be a catch up really with the xbox and the ps3, not a new generation of console
It's not a wii 2 it's a successor to the gamecube.
