Well, GameInformer posted this story yesterday, but I dug a bit deeper to take all of this past a rumor and confirm that there is a new Playstation 3 model will be coming to the market. For now it seems to only be confirmed for release on Japanese markets, but I have little doubt that it will soon be coming to stores around the world.

The new model will be CECH-3000B. The changes will not be anything groundbreaking but there will be changes nonetheless

The 3000B will be a 320Gb system. The changes include the power usage going from 230Watts to 200Watts. This will provide energy savings. The new system will also weigh less. It will be 2.6kg, down from the current 3.0kg weight of a PS3 slim.

Other changes will include some unknown adjustments to the power and eject buttons and the removal of the colored LED's on the system. It is also reported that instead of the smooth sides that are on all current slim models, the sides of the 3000B will be textured in the same way the top is.

All other specifications look to be the same as current models, including pricing.

On the official Japanese Playstation product page for the 3000B the release date is listed as:

This means that some Japanese stores may have already seen the release of this product. Hopefully we will all be seeing it too.

UPDATE

After a tip from a friend and further review of the product page, it looks as if this new PS3 will have compatibility with PS2 games. The product page states:

Now that quote is Japanese translated to English so it is a bit choppy, but it is pretty clear that is is stating that, "This product" meaning the CECH-3000B Playstation, will be compatible with Playstation 2 games via proprietary software.

Hopefully a firmware update for all other systems will also be released, allowing us to play our PS2 games again, but there is no confirmation of that.

Well hopefully they come out with a firmware version to allow us to play out Ps2 games or alot of people are going to be angry I bet just because it only plays it on this new Ps3 Slim Console. I still have my Ps2 though So I would not have to worry about this but still it would be nice to have this. :y:

Wrong dude. Any and all PS3's are capable of playing a PS2 game if Sony would just enable the damn software to do so. Older systems were able to up until a firmware update in which they disabled backwards compatibility.

EPIC FAIL! Go do your research.

1) Only chrome trimmed PS3's or early launch can play PS2 games via the Emotion Engine or Software Emulation

2) "Older systems were able to up until a firmware update in which they disabled backwards compatibility." - LOLOLOLOL EPIC FAIL, OtherOS/Linux much?

3) I have a 60GB PS3 that still plays PS2 games as well as millions of other users in the world

4) Without a Graphics Synthesizer, you can't even emulate PS2 which the UK PS3's did as they had no Emotion Engine(Japan/US PS3)

5) Sony removed the Graphics Synthesizer since the Silver trimmed PS3's to decrease costs.

6) ALL PS3 USE THE SAME FIRMWARE, if your PS3 doesn't have the right hardware the firmware will not be able to play PS2 games.

Don't ****ing Groan me because I'm right and your a dumbass.

Well I have removed my groan from your other post since you have proven me wrong. Good job. But I am groaning this post because you called me a dumbass. You can be mature and prove me wrong without using names like a child.

Thanks for the information though.
