In a turn of events for Microsoft's revenue monster, Kinect, they are now being sued.

Ohio based company, Impulse Technologies, Is stating that the technology violates seven of the companies patents, including:

EA, Konami, Sega, and many other game developers have also been named in the suit for producing and distributing games that use the Kinect technology.

If the suit is decided in favor of Impulse Technologies, then Microsoft would owe large damages and would also be required to remove the Kinect peripheral from shelves around the world.

Just like any other court case, there will most likely be a long drawn out procession. It could be months or years before a decision is made and the fate of Kinect is known.

So what are your opinions? Do you think that Impulse Technologies is simply out for it's cut of the cash? Do you think that the possibility of Kinect sales stopping would cripple Microsoft?

You guys are retarded. It doesn't matter how big a company is or how many lawyers they have, if this company had patented whatever it is MS are using, Microsoft can't get out of that just because they are bigger. And you guys would so do the same anyway. If you made a design that was unique and had it patented, then a large company comes along and uses your design without your permission, of course you would sue the company because you're losing out on money because of said company. There is nothing dumb or idiotic or whatever about the company suing MS. You would do the exact same thing.

Copying an idea and using the exact same idea are completely different things. It's like all these mobile phones that look the same. That's and idea that's copied. Now having an iPhone and a Chinese rip off iPhone using same technology but a different name and price, that's an exact same idea. Therefore, unless MS used the same tech as the eye toy, then yes, Sony could have sued, but I'm guessing they didn't because Kinect is more advanced. The lawsuit is not much at all and perfectly reasonable. You'd do the same thing if it was your patented idea they were using.

I agree with you, don't get me wrong. There are people who had a false idea. But my gripe is, where is it necessary to call people retarded? It's one thing to correct people, but it's another to go around and blatantly insult them using a term that has a much higher significance and sensitivity than you're even aware of.

Lol. This sue is worthless. How long as it been since kinect been out? And now they start to bother?
07-24-2011, 06:49 PM #25
well this could also potentially cause more damages than that because in theory microsoft will have to take back all the kinects sience theres no way to get any mechandise for them after the suit. I will be curious to see what ms does about this if it does happen

Shit, violating 7 Patents. I don't see how MS can get out of this one. Also, Kinect was a different and a lot more advanced than the Eye Toy so they were not breaking any patents there if Sony even did take a patent out on it which they probably did.

Also, another question, why sue them now? The Kinect has been out for like a year now, and its features have been known for like three so perhaps MS could use that to their advantage?

I know the significance of the word, thanks. But people here don't understand simple things. Like just because one company has all this money to a company who doesn't, that the small company will lose just because the bigger company will be able to have better lawyers, even if the big company has broken a patent, providing they even know what that is.
