Last night was the annual video game awards which sums together the best video games across multiple platforms of 2011. Obviously in the list their will be no surprise of some of these winners and they are well deserved. Here is a list of the winners of each category:

Best PC Game: Portal 2
Best PS3 Game: Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Best Xbox 360 Game: Batman: Arkham City
Best Graphics: Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Best Shooter: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Best DLC: Peer Review (Portal 2)
Best Downloadable Game: Bastion
Best Performance By a Human Female: Ellen McLain as GladOS (Portal 2)
Best Performance By a Human Male: Stephen Merchant as Wheatley (Portal 2)
Best Original Score: Bastion
Best Song in a Game: ‘Build that Wall (Zia’s Theme) By Darren Kobb (Bastion)
Best Adapted Game: Batman: Arkham City
Best Motion Game: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Best Independent Game: Minecraft
Best Fighting Game: Mortal Kombat
Best Driving Game: Forza Motorsport 4
Best Team Sports Game: NBA 2K12
Best Individual Sports Game: Fight Night Champion
Best Multi-Player: Portal 2
Best RPG: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Best Action Adventure Game: Batman: Arkham City
Best Handheld/Mobile Game: Super Mario 3D Land
Best Wii Game: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Studio of the Year: Bethesda Game Studios

And lastly the most prestigious game of 2011?

Game Of The Year: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

There was no surprise that best shooter would go to Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 3, keeping the call of duty series consistent winners of this category.

As usual Portal 2 managed to gather a load of awards, 5 awards and this again was no surprise for this game.

One of the surprises, at least to me was the sports game of the year, and not seeing FIFA take this as easily as I would have expected.

Now for game of the year it was good to see Skyrim to take the thrown away from Portal 2. Skyrim has had a huge launch and is up there beating modern warfare 3 as the most played game of 2011. (based on hours played and hours per session)

Reading an article online it picked up on a very interesting point about the awards.

Others criticize the award categories, some of which are confusing and seem to exist only to provide an opportunity to honour more games. Batman: Arkham City lost out to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for the game of the year yet won Best Xbox 360 Game, despite the fact that Microsoft’s console is the most popular platform on which gamers play Bethesda’s RPG. If categories for specific platforms are to be included, the popular argument goes, shouldn’t they be limited to games exclusive to each platform?

How can batman win the best Xbox game when Skyrim is the most played game on Xbox? It doesn't really make sense about how that was figured out by the panel. The panel is made up of 25 game journalists, which in my opinion isn't the best option when deciding the best games of the year, and it's the actual customers, the gamers who really know what they like.

Overall it was a successful event for multiple games and there were some very obvious winners.

How do you feel about how the winners are decided and the results of the awards?

There was a side vote set of from the main results. I didn't include them as I didn't understand how they were decided

Of the four viewer voted categories, ‘Character of the Year’, ‘Most Anticipated Game’, ‘Trailer of the Year’, ‘NFL Blitz Cover Star’, the results were as follows:

Character of the Year: The Joker (For his performance in Batman: Arkham City)
Most Anticipated Game: Mass Effect 3
Trailer of the Year: Assassins Creed: Revelations
NFL Blitz Cover Star: Ray Rice

Those were the results I just didn't understand what it meant by viewer voted, but looking at it now it seems to be like a live poll

I do;t like the graphics either really, I don't understand the praise they're getting. The art is nice but it's not displayed well.

The game seems very balanced to me. The only things worth "nerfing" were the IRNV scopes & the flashlights, both of which have seen fixes on the PC. If you disagree they needed fixing you were probably one of the ones who abused them tbh.

Yes I agree the IRNV scopes and flashlights required nerfing because I did use the IRNV and it was very OP. But when I said that them nerfing everything is a fail, I meant them nerfing the different weapons. Just because people are getting killed by certain weapons more than others, they are crying and saying those weapons are OP, and Dice/EA responds by "nerfing" them just to please the small majority of the BF3 community. The most common example being the USAS-12 with frag rounds, or any shotgun with frag rounds for that matter, now let me start off by saying I hardly ever use the USAS or any other shotgun but I have unlocked frag rounds for the USAS just to see how great it was, and let me tell you, it isn't nearly as good as people make it seem. I have died by frag rounds and thought they were OP but once I actually tried them out myself, I realized they kinda suck. All these people crying about weapons most likely haven't even tried them out themselves, and they just want them nerfed so they don't get killed by them anymore, if people actually tried the USAS w/frag rounds, they will see it isn't very OP. Another thing that they did which was a fail was nerf the snipers, sure they were a bit OP, but they weren't extremely OP, and I'm pretty sure IRL there is no "minimum distance" that you need to be from someone to kill them. And before you say I was one of those people running around with an MK11, or what not, let me tell you that I never ran around with a semi-auto sniper and a RDS or Holographic Sight, or whatever other attachment those kids were running around with. I honestly think everything was better either during beta or right when the game came out. Now everything is messed up.. Dice and EA released the game the way they did because they thought everything was how it should be (aside from glitches and what not), and now whiners are screwing everything up. /End rant
