As you may well know, a few hand held consoles have already thrown away game collections and have switched to technology that doesn't need discs. If reports about the Xbox 360's successor pan out, you may not need to clear up as much shelf space when next-gen hardware rolls out. An anonymous source has said, Microsoft has told its development partners that the console is foregoing an optical disc drive entirely. The source says the system will have support for a removable solid-state storage card instead, which could be another step toward a digitally distributed future.

In addition to that, it is reported that the system is set for a 2013 launch, which could mean we may see some sort of hardware announcement at this year's E3.

At this moment in time we are all a bit sceptical about the new xbox. It was rumoured earlier to be in the form of a tablet. Earlier reports also distinctively said it had a Blue-ray drive to, but until Microsoft says it is, we won't know a thing.

Thanks for reading, have a nice day.

If the discs are going to be SSDs, then physical game prices are going to go up. A lot.

A .30 disc =/= $25 SSD

Surely they're wiping out a large section of their market if they're changing to another format? I'm guessing internet downloads would be the most likely choice they'd change to?

Is that a confirmed picture of the next Xbox? And also, Xbox having Blu-ray would be a major step-up for Microsoft. =D

Another cool idea even though it would be impractical is everyone has their own SSD, and take it to a Game store which will have a kiosk and you could insert your drive and purchase respective content. Which is then loaded onto your drive. A neat concept but would take to much to implement...

I prefer to have a 'physical' game, with both a game disc and cover art. Therefor I say :n: to downloadable games.

Seriously though the Blu Ray was always the main thing the Xbox lacked they'd be stupid to not include one in the next console, surely?

If this does happen then it would just be another reason for me to not get an xbox. :/

And yeah. There's no competition to Sony without a BluRay player. :p
