Thumbnails are retrieved from You must login or register to view this content. and are downloaded on demand. They are built server side to include any features you have added to the car. eg: My cars with hacked parts show the hacked parts in the thumbnail. The server is not allowing or does not have the data for the BMW Vision so there are no thumbnails available.

The link works you just need to have the cert. The game makes a secure tunnel to that site, it uses a client cert to verify that it is the game connecting. Online play, thumbnails, etc. all go through that tunnel.
Sorry the post was misleading but that is still where they come from when you select update images.
