If he wants to swap the hdd once he has the ps3 downgraded, he will have to reinstall the cfw that he was on.
It's no big deal to do...

Nope won't hurt anything at all
He NEEDS to install the SAME firmware that the ps3 is on when he decides to do it though. Otherwise *dun dun dun* it will brick or be updated to OFW**
P.S: Make sure he has no disk in the tray lol
