Since you have such low operating temperatures, this leads me to believe your thermal paste is at fault. Reason for this is if the paste breaks down(which the crappy stuff Sony uses very sparinly btw does easily), then the system will overheat much quicker because its kind of designed as a failsafe to protect the motheboard from overheating and cracking the solder. Since the crap Sony uses has most likely broken down by now, the heat sinks will get hot much quicker since the paste is not properly dissipating the heat. I would be careful, as attempting to run it too much in it's current condition could definetly lead to a YLOD condition a lot quicker. My recomendation is to pick up a tube of Arctic Silver 5 and follow the video I posted here as long as the PS3 is a slim model(If its not a Slim, then find an appropriate video for opening your particular model up and apply paste the same). Depending on the slim, you may also need to pick up a T8 security Torx scewdriver for the easiest dissasembly. Also remember, that seperating the motherboard can be tricky. This video doesnt show it, but if you have trouble, use a hairdryer on a medium heat setting and soften up the existing paste(aim the blowdryer between the fan casing and the motherboard itself). Have patience so you dont want to accidentally crack the motherboard.here is an image of what old crappy thermal paste looks like. watch the video to see what a good thermal paste application should look like and you will see what I am talking about. You must login or register to view this content.

set to auto 60 deg c. thats a good compromise between noise and cooling.
