Even if this does end up being a result of ylod, do not do the oven method unless you don't give a shit about the outcome.. get a heatgun or get it reballed.

hmm..brown and grey wire..and potentiometer..im guessing you were trying to wire it up with the fan..

Brown wire is a 3-12v. Grey wire is signal wire. Grey wire tells the console what to supply the brown wire, so I wouldn't think they could short each other, but maybe i guess ya never know. Perhaps the black wire + either of those two caused the short but either way, kind of unlikely enough to cause your console to rlod..

If it is a short, it will be hard for us to help pinpoint that. It could be a lot of things really..I'd look for any noticeable blown capacitors along the motherboard. You can tell one is blown by looking at the tops. If they are blown, the tops are usually raised upward. Or burns and marks, etc. You will need to remove it and solder another one in.

Why were you rigging the fan to begin with? Is there a chance this could be from overheating/ylod? And is this a fat or a slim model ps3? What is the condition of the wiring at the moment, is it back to stock?
