Yes, you can

On your computer download whatever CFW (Custom firmware).
Then connect your memory storage device. (Normal USB, Ipod) to your computer.
On your USB, go to the root, and make a folder called PS3, and in that folder make a new one called UPDATE.
In the UPDATE folder place your CFW (PUP file). The name of the PUP file has to be UPDAT.PUP.
Then connect it to your PS3, and head over to "System Update" and update. For some CFW It could be recommended to enter "Safe Mode" on your PS3. To do this, hold the "Power on/off button" untill it turns off the first time, then hold it once again UNTIL you hear 2 BEEPS, then let it go It should be straight out from there

But don't worry, It won't brick your console. ¨

Rofl. Is this shit real? Whatever. Here is Kmeaw's CFW for 3.55. To do this, follow this simple tutorial.

On your USB flash drive create a folder called PS3
Double click that, and make another folder inside that and call it UPDATE
Double click that folder, and inside of that one, place this CFW inside. It should be titled PS3UPDAT.PUP
