typo meant to type/say "you say there's *no output/display"...
wee box thing?? ohh that back switch whtever it's called thing, but no sorry i meant the PS3 power supply unit (PSU). Looks either like this

Anyway, i'm not 100% sure, i don't want to incorrectly say or lie. But it's still sounds to me like a BLOD or GLOD fault (RSX & or CPU). Cos if it was the PSU box, then in those 3 mins "stays on for about 3 mins. Then turns it's self off" as you stated in OP, then i'd rule out PSU fault, cos in those 2 minute there would/should be a display/output to your TV.. So yeah i'm 80% sure it has to be BLOD/GLOD/RSX chip IMO i honestly think.
Same case with hard drive, if hard drive has sector problems/faulty, wouldn't affect the video output really, just a storage device not found bla message would be displayed .. edit: Hmm oh but just in case, if you haven't already test, take out your ps3's hard drive & try to turn it on, see if any difference. If none & same still after 2/3 minutes ps3 turns off, then it's definitely nothing to do with HDD.
