Also opened up 3 times still got same error. Put tape on cardboard then on clip for extra support.
firstly, did you put the cardboard under the metal fan plates? if so, good

i forgot to say, cereal box packaging might be a better idea, but this won't help with writing the dump, just making sure the fan has a good connection.
as for the writing part, examine the clip for any tears or scratches you think might be the issue. if you find any, stop right here and get a new cable from amazon (just search for "e3 flasher clip suit"). if you didn't see anything wrong with the cable, then take the clip off and clean the nor chip and the e3 cable pins with isopropyl alcohol 99%. the correct way of putting the clip onto the chip is to prop it vertically up against the back of the chip, and just flip it down like a door and apply some pressure (be careful, too much pressure can break the pins, so don't apply ridiculous pressure). then just stick it down with some black tape (preferred) or sellotape, and try writing again. if the worst comes to the worst and none of this works, you will have to use the e3 linker, which involves soldering a bunch of cables and can be quite hard if you aren't very good at soldering.
