So obviously my hdd is bad or corrupted, so i wanna format it with my PC. Now the question is, do I put the old cfw on it or can i use any one I want? Thanks!

There is absolutely no need to use a PC to format a Ps3 Hard Drive. It won't hurt it, but Im just saying since everyone and their momma thinks this is needed.

1. Insert the new Hdd into the ps3.
2. Boot ps3 into recovery mode
3. Select option "restore ps3 system"
This will wipe everything and format the hdd to the ps3
You will then be shown a black screen asking for your last syscall (the cfw you had installed last)
4. Install downgrader
5. Qa_flag if needed
6. Install cfw of your choice

Of course with the new hdd, you will need to reinstall any games, homebrew, settings, etc.

But when I boot into recovery, as soon as I click an option, my PS3 freezes. I then have to unplug the power cord from the back.. Or I would of done it that way. Drack

He doesn't have a second HDD, so your method would not work.

I have formatted my HDD with a PC before and plugged it back into the PlayStation and gone through the recovery process installing the Rogero 3.55 downgrader than returning to cfw etc.

So it could possibly work if you're willing to try

Ditto i have done this also.. i had to use diskpart to wipe as windows would not mount the drive when i put it in the enclosure. and then stuck it back in the ps3 followed the prompts using the same firmware i had installed before.
