I have my old ps3 same make and model as my new rebug ps3.only problem is my old ps3 crashed luckily my hard drive was not in at the moment of crashing. there is another ps3 it works but same amount of memory as new so kinda pointless lol but I'm running out of space on my new and I want to know if i can swap my hard drives with the hdd i got laying around and my new hardrive by using ftp to copy all files onto external usb hard drive then insert old hdd into new ps3 and format it or juss copy and combine my old with new files hard drives

You could do that, or you could try to clone one HDD to the other, but both have their ups and downs.
Cloning will result in the PS3 thinking you have the same storage space as on the HDD you cloned from (but you said their equal so that shouldn't matter) but trying to clone takes some time.

He means that you'd use a program to do a direct copy of the old HDD onto the new HDD. Problem with doing this is that the partition size (how much space is allocated) is exactly the same. Therefore, the PS3 will think it is still the same size as your old HDD.
okay so if I plug usb into pc open
FTP to copy all files from devHddo juss click whole file and move to tb usb external then remove hddo and swap with other hddo then copy files onto new hddo should I overwrite or format first
so I noticed that it says I can copy info using data transfer utility I do not have back up option. so if I was to insert my old hardrive from busted ps3 into my ofw ps3 and used the data transfer utility to copy my cfw hdd onto the ofw hdd will that allow me to remove the hdd from ofw ps3 and plug into my cfw ps3 without a problem

Idk how that's going to work..If you insert a new hdd into a ps3, it will require a format..You will have to improvise or try a software/hardware to attempt to make this happen(if even possible). Although, I have never actually seen/heard of this myself (full data transfer) actually being done successfully, on ps3(not saying it can't be done)..save games/music/pictures and maybe even dlc, etc is another story.
