Ideally you would change thermal paste before overheating damages start to cause the console to shut down. Because shutting down is happening already, it will most definitely need a reflow to jumpstart the console. Otherwise if a reflow + new paste doesn't work, it will need a reball or the console will need to be replaced.

GL to you!

Typically you would use a high powered heat gun, capable of reaching over 600*F. So, don't be surprised if the blow dryer does nothing for you :P been there.

One of the most notorious causes of YLOD is an issue in which the console overheats (more accurately the solder under the CPU/GPU melts and becomes disconnected from either the motherboard or the chip.
If this is what is wrong with the console (seems so), what you are experiencing is no longer overheating, but damages caused BY overheating. A reflow is an attempt to remelt the solder in hopes that it will gain this connection back.

The thermal paste does nothing other than aiding in distributing the heat from those chips to the heatsinks, so that the chips do not get hot. It doesn't decide if the console will run or not. If you can no longer boot the console before you are even attempting anything, then it will need a reflow at the least( to jumpstart) + the thermal paste(to keep it cool).

You can increase the speed of the fan if you want, but the main focus of repair should be at the chips. If the repair is done well enough you would be fine at normal fan speeds.

imo fan speed software should be used more so to prevent ylod than to battle with it. It won't help you much if you have already taken the damage.

IMO it will be much easier to just get a new jb ps3..

Buy one from a nice family or someone who seemed to have taken care of it, then get it jailbroken.

There are so many kids who pick up ps3s in your condition (dirt cheap i might add) and then reflow them and jb them to sell, only later to have the ps3 shit out on their customer and leading them to believe it was their fault.

I've learned this lesson the hard way with my business, but you can't run away when you do it locally..

Best way is to buy what I call "an old lady's ps3", jb, and maintain every number of months.

To maintain a ps3 takes a screwdriver, tissue(toilet) paper, and thermal paste(arctic silver 5). Every few months take your ps3 apart down to the motherboard, dust everything with the toilet paper, and apply new thermal paste. Making a schedule for this every so often can keep your ps3 alive forever.

GL!
