So i just replaced my PS3's thermal compound with artic silver mx-4 I used the artic silver acrtic clean to remove the existing compound on it instead of rubbing alcohol
everything appears to have taken well and the ps3 booted up just fine
my question is about the temperature of the ps3
so in the rebug toolbox i got 60cell 54rsx after 20 minutes
in gta5 after an aditional 20 min i got 75cell and 71rsx
all temperature is in celsius btw
are these temperatures normal for a ps3 playing gta5?
tbh that is 2degrees hotter on both than it was before i replaced the old compound
i used the spreading method should i replace it again with the grain of rice method?
thanks in advance
*note* in the time it took me to type this i had my ps3 on the XMB cooling down before i shut it down and the temps are now 64cell 57rsx ~roughly 10 minutes probably closer to 8 - which is cooler than the resting temps than before lol
Yeah that's the standard temp.. you can also buy an external fan to keep it cool.
Wow that's surprising
75c seems really high to me
Would a case mod be beneficial to the longevity of the console or is the fan you're referring to similar to a laptop cooler?

What fan speed do you have? I set it at a minimum speed of 40-50% depending weather Fat or Slim.
Its normal for cpu and gpu have around 5-10c difference.
Method of applying doesnt matter too much, I usually spread a thin even layer and put a little blob in the middle.
I aim to get my consoles to stay around 60c after a few hours. I also take off the ihs plates to apply underneath but does take quite abit of skill to do successfully

Changing your thermal paste early is the best thing you can do. If you changed it because of overheat, it won't help much, but replacing it without needing to can renew even the oldest electronic..if its not broken, don't fix it, so to speak..but if you are catching high temps, changing thermal paste can fix it up like new.
If you put too much or too little, it can effect your temperatures. You can check this video out if you want
I change thermal paste in my laptops/PC/Ps3s at least once a year(I use only arctic silver 5 on ps3s). Along with what I was saying on the amount can effect it, I put a thin line down my chips and spread it all evenly. At first the console will react. I think of it as a break it and in my experiences it goes away and the console's temps will smooth and balance out.
70s whether high or low is 100% normal for in game or after warmup...Don't expect much better than that from stock console. cut holes in your ps3 and add external fans, build a custom case, or watercool to get some better temps. It's possible for steady 40*c+/- consistently with the right mods..
GL!

Thread moved to PS3 Mods Questions and Inquiries
Yea that is normal, but you can also tweak the fan speed so the ps3 can run cooler

No it was a good thing, but it's a temp fix for the obvs thing that's gonna happen :fa:
Squid-Eye yeah I want to avoid the death of it as long as possible lol
BurtE what do you mean fan speed? I did that same method for thermal compound that you described
Should I get an app to adjust my fan? I wouldn't mind killing the fan for the sake of the console lol

D*mn bro thanks a ton
I tried to spread mine out as thin as possible but then put a tiny dot in the center
From what I've read these things make a lot of heat from the middle? So my goal was to make it a little thicker there
Lol as much as I would love to take the time to do that between school family and work there's no way I could dedicate that time to make a custom case
I saw a guy on YouTube NSC drill like a billion holes on the bottom of his case. I guess that's almost like making a structured test bench from the chassis?
If this thing lasts me until Sony shuts down the PS3 I would be continent with that
Yea that is normal, but you can also tweak the fan speed so the ps3 can run cooler
My bad man thanks for setting me up correctly
Yeah I keep hearing about this fan speed thing lol
I read a min ago that ita has a fan app for dex consoles? I'm on 4.78 rebug is ita still good for me? I haven't heard of them since 4.55 tbh
