About 3 days ago I was thinking of changing firmwares, So I chose 4.50 ITA Dex.
I downloaded it and went straight from 4.80 D-Rex Rebug to*4.50 ITA Dex.

When I booted the Ps3, it showed the waves but no icons and nothing loaded. I
decided to turn off the ps3 ( Pull the plug as the button wouldn't respond )
and reboot it but the same thing happened again.

I then went into recovery mode and chose option 3, this froze the console
so I turned it off. I rebooted and it said that the firmware couldn't run
and I must install any firmware above 3.50. So I grabbed the DEX Downgrader
and gave it a shot.

The update got stuck at 98% overnight so I tried again through the recovery*
menu. But when I clicked system update the PS3 froze. I tried every other*
option but they all froze.*

I tried another hard drive and it worked, but once I changed back
it was still broken. Formatting the hard drive is the LAST thing I want to do.

Any help with fixing this problem would be great.

I don't think there is any saving your data at this point..Let alone the fact you already popped another hdd into the ps3, which should mandatory format..

Just go to recovery mode and try to format the hdd. If it freezes, you know your hdd is broken and you will need to replace it with any 2.5" sata hard drive.

Format the hdd and reinstall your cfw, or a downgrader and then your cfw, and start over.

Ahh just the same. I heard you could bypass the mandatory format when changing hard drives using safe mode. If nothing can save me in a week I'll be formatting. :/

Aye, I've been messing around with the other hard drive. I got the other hdd and changed from DEX to CEX, then swapped back hard drives. It now says I need a firmware above 4.80, but when It was on DEX it said anything above 3.50. I tried installing the 999 downgrader but it said there was no applicable data. Then I tried Rebug 4.80.1 REX, and once again went to 98% and stopped. Any ideas? I'm not giving up hope yet.

If that one works, then you need to install a (DEX) cfw afterwards.
