Install a solid state drive (ssd) and get rid of the crappy hard disc drive (hdd) that your console came with. I personally would never play on any console with a hdd installed, especially the original 5400 rpm hdd. You will have no problem with rendering speeds as an ssd is about 8x faster than a hdd and the improved speeds are ridiculously noticeable.
The PS3 doesn't fully utilize a SDD, but it is a lot better than the default 5400RPM HDD it comes with. SSDs are not cheap either. I'd recommend at least upgrading to a 7200RPM HDD.
