In simple terms, here's why a simple usb stick will not work.

Note I am not "flaming" or putting anyone down.
These are the simple facts how this works.
I have been reading and learning how the process works for a very long time and am very familiar with how PPC operates.

The problem with the usb stick is that it can only do one thing, be a usb stick.

The dongle has the ability to do more than just a usb "stick" - in fact it has very little memory.
Per say the dongle has a little brain that can be taught to do various things.
The dongle pretends to be something it is not and cause the ps3 to "glitch" and open a "hole" for code to be injected into.
From there, the code starts to work and unlock the ps3's safeguards.

This is the simplest terms how it works and why a simple usb stick will not work.
Sadly, a usb stick can not trigger the "glitch" and the "hole" to form.
The ps3's security is far to strong/dose not work in ways to load files off a usb stick on boot merely having them on such a device.

Some people have been waiting for free means of a "PSJailbreak" device.
I encourage the development of free means of doing this - however i am not holding my breath.
Most likley it will be done using a usb A to A cable on a computer, psp, iPhone, or Android device.
Basically this exploit needs something with a "brain"

I feel this will clear things up for most people.

I use quotes around "PSJailbreak" as when i say "PSJailbreak" i also am referring to the clone devices witch function the same way as well.
They all use the "smart" stick concept.

So to conclude things:
You must login or register to view this content.
A device like this will not work!

Its not nice to be the messenger, but someone has to do this or else people will start to waste $ and time.

What if you were to hack a usb thumb drive that you get from pharmaceutical companies or universities. You know... a thumb drive with an executable flash program that launches once the drive is inserted into your PC. They usually contain very little memory... and contain said executable program.

Make sense?

Good idea, but sadly this is usually all done on the OS side.
Windows since 95 (and 3.1 - done differently though) has had an auto-run feature that can automatically start set programs using a hidden configuration file.
I use this feature when creating picture disks for family to automatically open the pictures for ease of use.
Some devices such as IornKey secure usb keys have a little more "witchcraft to them" - but cannot replicate "PSJailbreak's" exploit.

Yes, I have an iPhone as well, I see this working on Android over the iPhone but there is still a chance.
USB and Android a la Nexus One can get pretty intense!
You can even use a USB tv tuner with the NX1!

The iPhone does have copy & paste. Although the PS3 does not recognize the iPhone as a device, (at least I don't think it does) it does not mean it can be ruled out of these few smart phones. The iPhone is by far the most common phone in the smart phone industry.

I'd sure love it if the iPhone was the way to go but I could most certainly adapt to any other method(s).
