Sounds silly, but it's true. We can extract PUP files, but not compress them. We can extract them, change say the 3.41 firmware to say 3.42 (just a renaming it, if you like!) in one of the extracted files, and then pack it again. Only thing is that we can't repack it...

I think a much easier way to do it would be to just modify "version.txt" in the PS3's flash.
I
think I know a way to bypass future firmware updates though. The only problem is once the PS3 knows there's a new update, it'll be hard for us to change that.
But I think there's a way to prevent it from knowing there's a new update in the first place.
