Whenever I go to open up a game on my backup manager (Dead rising 2) it loads up, and then when I choose to play the game, it freezes. What is the cause of this?

Have you installed it straight off disk,

If so

Play the game through disk
Then Delete Copy
Back it up again
Play through disk
Play through backup!

I can get a ps3 that could be UPGRADED to 3.41 from a friend.
It does however have a broken laser or something that makes it unable to read discs.
I'm sure it is still jail breakable since it has nothing to do with the disc drive(as far as I know).

So my question is could I do everything by transferring the files from game backups using ftp from my pc TO my ps3?

Basically how much would I be missing out if I had a jailbroken ps3 with no disc reading capabilities?

Do you know anything about a release date or something?
