Your ganna need a Sata 2.5" Laptop size hard drive with a 5400RPM. You can get a hard drive with a higher RPM, but it might cause the PS3 to produce more heat.. A Sata 2.5" hard drive with a 5400RPM is recommended.
Not sure about external HDD's
