digiw0rks is right, they have not "technically" broke any laws. They did release keys, but this was neither for profit nor financial gain. Geohot did release a "firmware", but this clearly stated it was not "Official Sony firmware".
No one owns anything, I have a PC, I don't own it, i borrow it. Windows, i don't own it, it is owned by Microsoft, yet if I want to hack it and release exploits, then i would be technically breaking the law the same as the PS3 according to Sony.
Did you know modifying or re-chipping your car's ECU (control unit) is considered hacking? This could end up with you getting "sued" for modifying a vehicle manufacturers software. But it does not happen, because it is pointless.
The point of this is, Sony are doing this to keep developers happy. They know they have no way to fix this now, and a legal battle is the only power they have left.
