it could be my shitty ethernet cable though

so is there a better way? can i somehow use file manager

Yes filemanager would be faster, or you could make partitions of a FAT32 hard drive and run games from it, I think.(So you can use more than 30GB)

I have a 2 TB external hard drive so I just put the stuff on there and transfer it using awesome file manager because its so much faster. FTP is good but its not good for transferring files that are too big.
*You could also use a flash drive, depends how big it is if its not big enough you could put some files on it and transfer little by little. I might take a little while but its faster than FTP server. By the way if you don't have an external hard drive. I would suggest you to get it. It is a great investment.

Well how big is your external? Or If you have an extra internal computer hard drive lying around I believe there is a way to make it into a external hard drive. If you already have an external hard drive or USB device. Use windows formater ( if device i.e. Flash drive, hard drive etc is under 32 GB) or use Easeus (to format more than 32 GB but also works for less than 32 GB) to format it to fat32. After that just put the stuff on it.

Yes if you partition it. Unless you mean a single file is over 4GB.

Climbing up the ladder
You could use Comgenie's File Manager if

1. The file you're uploading isn't 4 gb by itself. You could put 2gb (or 1gb... I don't know how much your usb can hold) on your usb, copy it, delete it from your USB, and then copy 2gb more to your usb, then copy that to your PS3, delete, etc

2. You can afford an 8gb USB stick

But if you can't do either of those, I don't think there really is a way to do this without an FTP server :( sorry.
