Right, i'm on 3.55 and cant go online, i'm trying to come up with a 3.56 bypass, i've successfully tricked my ps3 into downloading my custom modded You must login or register to view this content. file, any ideas on what to edit inside the ps3-updatelist.txt ?

it currently says:

    # UK
Dest=87;CompatibleVersion=0000bc25-;
Dest=87;CompatibleSystemSoftwareVersion=3.5600-;
Dest=87;ImageVersion=0000bc76;SystemSoftwareVersion=3.5600;CDN=https://duk01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/ps3/image/uk/2011_0127_6e070c96e0464e993aaf9deac3660863/PS3UPDAT.PUP;CDN_Timeout=30;

any ideas, I've already tried changing 3.5600 to 3.500 but it still wants to download something.

Thanks Happy

We (the people active in this thread) are going to compare Signing into PSN on 3.55 and signing in on 3.56. We will be using wireshark to record what gets sent from the PS3 to sony & vice versa.

We will sign in on each firmware, OFW 3.55 and OFW 3.56, and while signing in wireshark will be recording the data being sent back and forth.

Hopefully this will get us one step further to bypassing 3.56 again Smile.

EDIT 2:

Right I have successfully recorded data while signing in on OFW 3.56, the file is located here (some bits I had to take out as these were getting picked up by other things, my antivirus updating and other things)

but I have recorded the data while signing in on 3.56, its somewhere in there :P Just have a look at it and see if you find anything interesting

UPDATE: I added the .pcap which shows alot more information:

You must login or register to view this content.

You'll need to download Wireshark to open it: DOWNLOAD WIRESHARK You must login or register to view this content.

Now were waiting for the wireshark 3.55 "PSN sign in" data

EDIT 1:

If your using the DNS bypass, or proxy bypass, then when you try system update via internet, it will say it has the current version, yet if you sign in via PSN it says theres a system update available.

So Sony has found out the real firmware through PSN, somewhere on the ps3's HDD is a file that tells sony that the ps3 is on 3.55, but where is this file?

Ways I see of fixing this:

finding the file and changing 3.55 to 3.56

installing a custom firmware which blocks out updates, or which says its on 3.56.

as I said you can try and spoof it through this way, as it will not work when you login to the PSN it checks somehow what system version your using it used to check through updatelist.txt, it still does, but there's also another way it checks, this is what were trying to find out. I've already hosted my own updatelist.txt on my own web-server, and it has the exact same effect as a dns bypass or a proxy bypass.

Yes I know, i'm saying that you can't actually edit the file.

Yes you can its very simple but it doesn't matter since it does nothing

You'll probably find that Sony have found out the firmware version from a simple file or something, and Sony wouldn't set up PSN to ignore DNS settings otherwise what would be the point in having them?

I just think that to have playstations look for something complelty different or send out something different than what was oroginally wrote into the Firmware would require an update on our end. But since nobody that is interested in this has accepted an update then they must have to ignore something server side.

(kinda like what IW did with Modern Warfare 2 on xbox they knew they wernt going to get an update in so they actually changed there playlists to ignore all the DVARS that were coming from modded patches)

Now i know that this DNS trick has been around for almost a year now and the thing keeps coming back after updates and all Aaron does is update his updatelist.txt and its all back on so Sony Must be ignoring something because if it was patched it wouldnt keep coming back on like it has done since last year it would just stay indefinitly

these are update from his website over the last year each time there has been an update and each time its been blocked the DNS trick started in march/april last year

UPDATE: [April 13th, 2010] Sony has effectively blocked all known methods of bypassing the latest firmware. At the moment there is no alternative for accessing PSN besides updating through the normal means. For those who were using this DNS, set your Network DNS Settings back to Auto (or whatever you had it set to previously) if you wish to make the update.

UPDATE: [September 7th, 2010] 3.42 is now out and blocks PSGroove. For whatever reason, the DNS/proxy trick hasn't been blocked yet. People on 3.41 (and possibly lower) can still get on PSN! I've reestablished my DNS server for the time being.

UPDATE: [January 27th, 2010] 3.56 can still be bypassed by those on 3.55 at the moment. This is expected to last for a little less than a week, so if you don't want to update past 3.55 now's your chance to jump on PSN and maybe grab something from the store.

Can you show some proof of how "Aaron" did it.

I configured BIND to point *.ps3.update.playstation.net to the same IP, and configured my lighttpd to serve a custom updatelist.txt file for all regions that tells the PS3 it's up-to-date.

"Skipping the 3.21 PS3 update" if he did it on 3.21 then it won't work on this, because sony aren't doing something server side I believe they're getting the firmware version from a file on our ps3.

this is the same thing everyone was using up until yesterday he's had it up for just under a year thats what i was just sayng before it goes off then later it comes back when sony release new updates

if they were getting files from the ps3 they would have to have installed some kind of "rootkit" to change it

Figured I'd at least post this somewhere, since Sony made a pathetic move today (April Fools, yeah right) that affects a large number of PS3 owners; the removal of OtherOS. The 3.21 update apparently does nothing but remove a feature for "security concerns." I didn't even want to install it on my PS3 Slim, so I went and adjusted my server to bypass the update for myself and others.

Basically, this will allow you to use the PSN and play your games online while still having an older PS3 firmware version installed, such as 3.15.

If, eventually, a disc game comes out that requires 3.21, you will be forced to upgrade to play that game; there's nothing you can do about that yet. But in the meantime...

You can go to customize your network settings from XMB, and get to the part about DNS nameservers. Select custom, and enter the following IP as your Primary DNS:
67.202.81.137

And there you go, PSN works.

Sony already has access to our PS3's for all we know, when we log into PSN we will be giving away our IP Address, Browser, Operating System just like on a PS3 we will be giving away our IP Address, PS3 Firmware Version, and maybe even other information.

well the rootkit was introduced in 3.56 in the firmware so it couldnt be changed for people on any version below 3.56.
