It says that both ps3s must be updated to the newest firmware..
Not sure if this is new, but if this link is, aren't we screwed?

thats how it works. its how it always worked. it was 3.41-3.50. 3.41-3.55. 3.41-3.56. thats what ive tested Smile.

you can data transfer:

3.55 -> 3.56
3.56 -> 3.56

you can't transfer to lower firmwares.

Yes, but you would loose the patch(and everything else) on the original ps3
