/dev_hdd0/home/xxxxxxxx/exdata/act.dat
/dev_hdd0/home/xxxxxxxx/*.rif

When you pay for and download anything from PSN, a RIF file will appear in your exdata folder. This file contains the following information:
-Contend-ID
-Date and Time of Purchase
-Expiration (such as in the KZ3 MP Beta)
-PSN User Information

All of course is encrypted.

In the act.dat file, there is the following:
-PSN User
-PSN User 'Tag'
-PSN User Information (some kind of authentication details)


You'll find the 'Tag' is in the RIF files aswell, but backwards (for unknown reasons).

So, basically what I'm trying to explain to you all here is that the PS3 allows DRM-Protected files to executed only if their corresponding RIF files match up to the act.dat file.

If any of you change your act.dat file, then all you currect DLC and purchased software will not work, which is why I strongly advice against using the Black Ops map pack 'hack'.

I am currently working on a way to get copyrighted DLC and other software to boot up without checking for any RIF files. It doesn't appear to be as easy as it sounds...

Finally, I wouldn't share you act.dat with anyone, because if Sony get hold of it, you're looking at complete console ban (although we can bypass now) but also you DLC probably getting thrown out the window...

Thank you all for comments, I just wanted to get the word around so people don't misunderstand what they are or even lose their DLC!

So when a game boots, it checks if your account bought it in the files.
there must be a file that does the "boot order", you just need to find it

Well, the thing is that not ALL dlc has rif files... It only seems to be ones you pay for and ones that have an expiration date...
