The firmware is /I think/ opened and patches MANY files in the file system so there isn't one file

Yeah the ram/flash memory/nand but i thought this before and researched it but if you replace the flash memory your ps3 WILL not work.
You could always buy a new motherboard on ebay but you will be lucky to find one that pairs with your ps3. And you need to swap a chip its all a bit to complicated for me but you could try there tuts. on youtube!

so i couldnt just replace the whole mother board from a ps3 that is a fat 80 gig reverse compatability 4 usb ports (same as i have)??

You could but look at the cereal number on the back of the ps3! But the one you buy would have to be on 3.55 so look for an old one!
Then you have to keep your blueray chip from your motherboard and put it on the new board! There are plenty of tortorials on YouTube!

for slims its on the NOR and fat is on NAND which is attached to the Motherboard its flash memory so try reflashing it
But you first gotta make this.
