depends on what you are backing up, save data, music, videos etc. How big is your hard drive and how much space have you used? If you go to system settings it will tell you there. Obviously if you only want to back up some save data, then it wont be much at all.

i just want to back up my patches (so i can switch between them when i update from 3.55)

that wont be much at all then. Having said that, your patches should still be there after you update so i don't think you will need to back them up. A system update only writes to flash and doesn't effect your hard drive. If you want to be sure, you could use comgenies awesome file manager or if you are using multiman, it has a file manager built in. Simply locate the individual files and copy them across to a USB storage device. A gig should do it.

if i just copy the files off the hdd using a file manager i wont be able to load that back onto my ps3 when i update, will i?

hmmm, good point. If you plug your USB in and go to game data, is the USB displayed at the top and if so, what are the options when you press triangle?? might be copy options there.

no, :( theres no copy opion there ( thats save data your on about. )

yeah, i knew there was options for save data, but i couldn't remember if game data had them as well.
