You should have updated to OFW 3.55/3.56/3.60 etc then 3.66. Such a jump might've screwed something up. Turn PS3 on, then off. Then hold button until you hear two fast beeps. You'll hear it when you turn it on, another random one or two. You're listening for like really fast consecutive ones. Then it should say connect a controller via usb, follow instructions and have a usb stick with one of the above fws on it, and update from the menu (choice 6 or something). Then update to the newer newest

probably doesn't have a warrenty (the one year one) unless he bought an extended one. (Which no one does).
