Recently i've been reading a lot of the threads asking for help with their jailbroken ps3.
So i've decided to help you guys out!
I'm going to make this as noob friendly as possible, so let's jump right in!

Before i start, i want to tell you that you cannot jailbreak a PS3 higher than 3.55. Do not fall for anyones shit saying you can. UNLESS they tell you, that you must downgrade. Then they are telling you the truth. The only way to jailbreak your ps3 if its above 3.55 is to downgrade. which requires hardware modifications.
The Basics.

Let's start off from the real real basics. assuming you've just gotten your ps3. We shall say its on, uhm, 3.55 OFW. k?
Questions going through your head, what should i do first, how can i do this, what is this, what is that?
Calm down. Take a deep breathe. We're going to take this one step at a time!!
We're going to select what Custom Firmware is good for you!
Now, if you're not going to be modding any games, and just use this for entertainment, (such as TV, backing up games, etc. ) Then i advise you go with rogero cfw.
If you're going to be doing modded lobbies, and doing services, I advise you go with Rebug or PS3ITA
Depending if you wanna switch to dex or not.
Best DEX firmware (IN MY OPINION) is PS3ITA 4.50 or PS3ITA 4.21
Here are some firmwares you need to stay away from: OFW and SEX. These = No Jailbreak.
Do NOT install these unless you want to unjailbreak. got it?

Now that you've selected your firmware, you can go ahead and install it! If you don't know how, have no fear!
What you need is:
a USB device
Now, on the root of your USB device, make a folder called "PS3" (just like that, all caps.)
open that folder, and make another called "UPDATE" (again, exactly like that, all caps.)
Place your PS3UPDAT.PUP file in the "UPDATE" folder. (if its named something else i.e" Rebug3.55REX.PUP" Rename it.
rename it to "PS3UPDAT.PUP (dont unclude the E, just make sure its exactly PS3UPDAT.PUP)
Once you've done that, plug your USB into your ps3, and navigate over to settings.
Its the very first option, you guessed it, "System Update". Click it.
Choose "install via storage media device."
From there, its self explanatory.
Oh, one other thing, QA flag, its very important!
Congrats, you're now on a custom firmware!

Now here comes the fun stuff :p
Homebrew can be anything from a game update to file managers. They can do so much.
You now have "Install Package Files" and "APP_HOME"
Install package files is what you use to install homebrew.
App_Home is to run games you've backed up, but you probably wont use this too often as you can run games from another disc. (which is simpler)
To install a package file, simply download whatever homebrew you want, make sure the extension says .pkg
Put the .pkg file on the ROOT of your USB, and then plug your usb into your ps3.
Go to install package files, click on it, and then click on the pkg file to install it.
You'll see it installed under the "Game" category.
BUT WAIT! Heres something you NEED to know.
NEVER ever EVER be signed in while you're using homebrew. This will get you banned. Don't believe me? Try it.
If you got an error trying to install or start your homebrew, odds are its not supported for your firmware.
so just look for one that supports your firmware! Most pkgs get fixed for higher firmwares.
If you didn't get any errors, and you loaded up your homebrew fine congrats!

Don't change or delete any files you dont know about, you could brick!

If your on OFW you need a E3 flasher to downgrade, only if it's a compatible system

I would like to make my PS3 a DEX PS3 but all of this stuff makes my head hurt because I have no idea what most of this stuff is 
I just want to mod more games but I'm pretty sure I need to be able to connect my PS3 to my laptop with FTP blackbox or other programs but I'm on an old fat PS3 with no buit-in wifi and the router/modem is in another room so I can't connect my PS3 to the router/modem for internet Oh well...

Hey this is a very good tutorial for beginners, I got an understanding on stuff works for jail broken ps3s. Anyway what I have trouble with understanding is how to like install mods/hacks to a game in this case cod ghosts. Like the package files, do I just find the modded packaged file and put it on my usb then update to get it on the ps3? Im soz if this sounds retarded but im like really really new to this all 
but if anyone is good enough to help me jailbreak my ps3 pm me or skype me @ wtf
