You need to get a kill/plant/flag cap before whoever is hosting the open party goes to find a game/switches lobby/disbands the party

but the game can't even start the countdown gets to about 6 and kicks me, even when the host of the open party sits in a lobby

Could be a bad connection to the party host. Add me and give it a shot, I have an open party that two people are using with no problems
