Microsoft is finally moving to embrace the growing community of tinkerers(A.k.a. Hackers) who have cooked up creative uses for its Kinect motion-sensing camera on PCs.

Within the next couple of months, the company says it plans to release a toolkit, known as a software development kit, that will allow programmers to design software for Windows 7 PCs that can exploit Kinect, a hit device from Microsoft that has so far been used to play games for the Xbox 360 console...

...The toolkit is Microsoft’s effort to jump in front of a parade of programmers that have already cobbled together their own software, without Microsoft’s permission, to make Kinect applications for PCs. A lot of these programmers have posted videos of their Kinect hacks online, including someone who transforms a stick in his hands into a Star Wars-like You must login or register to view this content. and another person who controls an animal using hand-puppet You must login or register to view this content.

“We think we’ll see a huge explosion in interest,” Mundie said. “We’ll welcome that and support it.”

Seriously why can Sony not do this!? If Microsoft can give hackers a dev kit without any problems why in the HELL can Sony not do this. Yea I know why, its because Sony doesn't care about their customers. Sony could easily make a TON of money if they were to release/charge for a dev kit, they wont do that tho.

I am now a Microsoft "fan boy" :embarrassed:

I have a gambling problem
I seen an article like this before, not here just in general, it all started after the video of the kinect controlling itself while flying.

I'm glad M$ can accept hacking happens and give people dev kits etc.

Sony needs to step up the plate...

In fairness, it is a good move by Microsoft but you have to look at like, all it's allowing people to do with the Kinect is unlock it's full potential and make it a better device, so Microsoft benefits. The xBox itself is already hacked to shit and there's nothing Microsoft can do about it now, and they didn't exactly help anyone hack the console itself.
Sony is clamping down on hackers because it is going to lead to the ability to pirate games. So Sony stand to lose millions in revenue.
There is a massive difference between the two scenarios.

Microsoft have everything to gain, Sony have everything to lose.

Sony is too busy trying to "find" (SUUURE Sony. We all know you're downloading it.) child pornography on Geohot's computer to think about money.

It's because it's a completely different thing.. If Sony's move was like M$'s Kinect then I'm sure they would.

I mean I agree with you on it's a good thing, but I wouldn't straight up believe they support hackers 100%, if they did they would release dev 360's. They have come to realize that if someone tinkers with the Kinect it won't have any negative effects piracy wise, and on top of that the people know what they want most.

Personally I feel if we still had linux the ps3 would have some very creative and useful tools.
