Third place is the new second, it seems. Data firm Strategy Analytics is reporting that, as of the end of 2010, PlayStation 3′s total active user base is 43.4 million units worldwide, whereas Xbox 360′s universal numbers amount to 42.9 million. Nintendo Wii is still on top, with 75.5 million active units across the globe.
“While the Kinect peripheral has given a boost to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 strategy, the console’s performance outside of the U.S. continues to disappoint,” says Strategy Analytics’ Digital Consumer Practice analyst Jia Wu.
“Global demand for Sony’s PS3 has exceeded that of the Xbox 360 in each of the past two years, and we expect that to continue over the coming years.”
Wu recommends Microsoft “continue[s] to innovate around its [Kinect] motion sensor technology, which will become increasingly relevant in the smart home era.”
The report closes predicting Xbox 360 will sell another 13.7 million by the end of 2011, while PlayStation 3 will sell a further 15.7 million. Wii, on the other hand, will continue to decline.

Well, you may not gonna believe me, i used to work Sony Company (CEO in South America and Italy) as a journalist for PS3 exclusive games and also i do check on Promo and beta games before they released( check glitch, bugs error) Make a contact on dev's too.
and we go on 1 on 1 with Microsoft as a competition, of course we know what Microsoft been doing behind scene with their XBOX360 console.
Unfortunately I don't work with Sony anymore, now i working on building site, as a Carpenter and also do Furniture maker too. I still working on gaining bussiness if im lucky.

You actually paying XBL fees for fixing other gamer RROD console and make a recover loss after microsoft lose alot of profit due to 57% XBOX360 console RROD abd other problems. Microsoft knew they were facing big problem with faulty XBOX360 consoles before they were released.

Pretty much same what HeLLoKiTTyLuveR said, YLOD is not famous as RROD. I used to own (from 2005-2007) three XBOX360 that just gave me RROD from last two years and even i don't play XBOX360 that much, So WTF eh?
Personally, i havn't had the YLOD yet and i had my PS3 60GB since November 2006 and not even one single problem so far. This is to show how reliable PS3 is built for. I havn't even own the PS3 slim yet.
When it comes to being frequent, the PlayStation 3's YLOD is not nearly as frequent as the XBOX360's RROD. It is a much more dominant failure than YLOD. RROD was actually so bad at one point, that Microsoft had to release a 3 year warranty for XBOX360's that get RROD. It also cost them over 1 billion dollars in 2007 alone. (that when XBL Fees comes in to make a recovery from loss profits)
Based on what Microsoft said back in 2007, The XBOX360's failure rate was at 32%, which was an all time high. Recent surveys (as of November 2009) showed the 360 failure rate to be at 60%, doubling what they had in 2007, which was already the highest failure rate of any video game console in history. Many say the "Jasper Chip" helped the failure rate decrease, when this is obviously not the case. XBOX360 Elites have the exact same problems as previous models.

Sony said the failure rate was at less than 07% earlier this year. Microsoft has never revealed the actual failure rate based on their statistics since that day in 2007.
Since RROD became famous, it hits all over TV new and claim that XBOX360 was the worst bulit console in the history.

Both consoles have there good points, you are listing yours and i am listing mine...
