One of the company's insurers has asked a judge to rule that it is not liable for losses related to the cyber attack.

In April, Sony discovered that hackers had gained access to 77 million accounts on its PlayStation Network.

The firm agreed to pay anyone who lost-out financially as a result of the incident, but it is still being sued by a number of users. PlayStation Network was shut down worldwide for more than a month while Sony reviewed its security procedures.

Zurich American Insurance has now gone to court in New York seeking a declaration that it does not have to help Sony with current or future legal action related to the data breach.

Legal papers filed by Zurich reveal that 55 separate class action lawsuits are pending in the US because of the breach.Also underway are investigations by state and federal regulators that could also end-up before the courts.

Sony has made claims on several of its insurance policies, including one with Zurich, to help pay its legal bills and provide compensation. However, Zurich argues that the policy it set up for Sony does not cover the part of the business that suffered the breach or the sort of damage the theft caused. Specific clauses in the policy also rule out Zurich providing cover, it said.

Sony declined to comment because the matter is the subject of pending litigation. In financial statements, Sony said it expected costs for the breach to top 14bn yen (£109m) this year. The figure does not include any costs for compensating customers.

So what do you personally think? Do Sony deserve all of this? Or do you think they deserve more for the PSN Outage?

Sony does deserve it for putting all of us at risk. This is what happpens when you don't take the necessary security precautions to protect from hacks. Sony didn't care about their security. Ultimately, Sony got a wake up call from their power trip: "Update your shit." is pretty much what Sony learned. Because they didn't bother to protect our information, they get lawsuits.

I think that Sony don't deserve everything that they are getting. I agree that they should pay back any money lost from hackers, but after that they get taken to court as well, which I do not find fair. In my opinion, it looks like they are doing everything they can to help the people that have been hurt from this attack. They have given all the PSN users a 2 free games, which are reasonable games, and then a month of PS+ for all PSN customers. This is definitely enough for me and the fact that they have now updated their security makes me feel safe that it will not happen again. Do they need to do more?

Sony deserves all of it. They knew we were at risk by not having a sufficient security system, now they pay the price.
And wow they gave us a choice of 4 games most PS Users already had....

also PS+ is just a rip-off version of XBL Gold. If anything, they should have given everyone a choice of any 2 games
they wanted, not out of an out-dated list. I bet Sony lost a huge percentage of PSN users to whatever network,
just for being ignorant and cocky about their network. F*CK YOU SONY!

To be honest, I didn't really hear many people complaining about the security before the PSN was hacked. It wasn't their number 1 priority as they had no reason to worry about it at that moment in time, and neither did we. You only learn from experience in my opinion.



After having to spend a fortune on a massive, month long update for their security, and then on top of that have to pay people back for money stolen, and then on top of that get sued, I didn't really expect to be able to chose out of games that are selling well and that aren't made from Sony.

I am aware. But their database version was YEARS behind the updated version. They thought they were invincible and that no one would test the waters to hack them, and look what happened. They didn't even bother to defend themselves or put any defense whatsoever.
