What you have found is the Alien Blaster.
It is one of the greatest weapons to ever grace the fallout world.
You only get a certain amount of cells.
A way to combat this is to mod your in-game items. (the ammo in specific)
This way you can have unlimited ammo.
If you do not wish to mod your game save, on one of the DLC (either mothership zeta or point lookout) there are a few cells.
I would only advise using this weapon on rare occasions as ammo is short (if you don't mod it)
Personally, I'm more of a melee weapons guy.
I usually 1 hit things with "Fawkes Super Sledge"
