Note: This also works for Xbox, however I don't own an Xbox so I don't know the steps for setting up a static IP.

Determine your Default Gateway

1. On your computer, go to the start menu and click Run. From there, type in cmd. When the command prompt comes up, type in ipconfig. Write down the Default Gateway that shows up.

Set up PS3 using manual IP
1. Go to your Playstation Settings, then to Network settings. From there, click Internet connection settings.

2. Select Custom, then your type of connection (Wired or Wireless)

3. At the network device settings page, select auto-detect

4. At the IP address settings page, select manual IP. For the IP address, take your Default Gateway and put in there, but with a different number at the very end. EX: If your default gateway was 192.168.1.0, I would put the IP as 192.168.1.99. The .99 at the end is the device number, this number is convenient as it is unlikely you have 99 other devices on the network.

5. Unless you have manually changed your subnet mask, it will be 255.255.255.0

6. For the Default Router, Primary DNS, and Secondary DNS, input your Default Gateway.
Note: You can also put 8.8.8.8 as your primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 for your secondary DNS to use Google DNS instead of your own router's DNS.

7. MTU - Automatic

8. Proxy server - Do not use

9. UPnP - ENABLED

Putting your Router into DMZ (opening all ports)

1. Type your default gateway into your internet browser and go there. It will ask for a password. Look at your router provider's website for the default username and password.

2. Look for the DMZ option (In my router it is under Applications and Gaming)

3. Enable DMZ for the Static IP you gave your ps3. (the static IP was the first number you put in your ps3's settings)

4. To do this, it is quite simple. For source IP, make sure it says any IP. for destination, enter your static IP.

5. While you are in your router's settings, look for the option named UPnP and enable it. It is usually located under 'Administration'

Your PS3 is now in your router's DMZ!

If you need help finding the DMZ for your router, quote this post and reply with your router Manufacturer and model.

What do you do so that your router doesn't time out so much?

Your PS3 will only get NAT type 1 if it is directly connected to a DSL Modem. And nothing else is between it.
