so wondering if you guys had any suggestions?
Im thinking something free-roam and modern day based, something like mercenaries 2 or GTA4.

GTA 4 is an excellent game.

You'll get a very fun 30 hours out of Saints Row: The Third.

Fallout 3 or New Vegas? Also Saints Row: The Third is pretty hilarious.

Saints Row The Third is fun, especially coop.

I recommend Bioshock, it's a good FPS and it's like a Skyrim (how you supports the character).

If you're looking for a game like that I recommend GTA4. Other great games are Uncharted 3, Infamous 2 (Great game :y
