Gonna give this a shot with a clean account; I'll update this with findings.
EDIT:
So no insta-pops here, though this game does essentially consist of a lot of Easter eggs and boss fights for the trophies.
If you hit Continue, you're placed at the end of the game just before facing Judas (final boss).
Defeating Judas provides you with Judas' Repentance and eventually Black Star Rises.
One bonus of using the save is that you'll have a nice amount of upgrades, which saves some time, as well as access to what's essentially a chapter select, allowing you to bounce between locations.
