If you always by a 3 month membership every 3 months you are pretty much paying 100$ so 40$ more.
If you are getting a 1 month membership then you are paying 120$ because a membership for 1 month is only 10.00$

That's the whole point of it... everything gets cheaper when you buy it in bulk.

this is exactly why i bought the 12 month gold when i bought my xbox, but i personally think paying is ridiculous..

OR! Sell your xbox, buy a PS3 and over 12 months: $+30

Just buy during promotions if you want a membership that runs 1-3 months instead of 1 year.
