Multiple sources inform me Microsoft will announce what amounts to a complete reversal on its DRM policies for Xbox One today. What does this mean?

  • No more always online requirement
  • The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
  • All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
  • An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
  • All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
  • No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
  • Region locks have been dropped

It is unclear what caused this huge change in policy right after E3, a week where Microsoft executives spent days explaining, justifying, and talking about its policies to the press. I suspect Microsoft’s official announcement will say something to the effect of “we've been closely listening to consumer feedback.”
Based on what I’m being told, that’s definitely true.
I've reached out to Microsoft for comment.
Microsoft has taken an enormous amount of heat regarding DRM policies with its new console. Sony became consumer heroes at E3, announcing PlayStation 4 would not treat used games differently, and the status quo would reign. The company released this video, twisting the knife:

Edit:

Kotaku just broke reports as well. Apparently Microsoft is also updating the Q&A page.

Both Sony and Microsoft and basically every corporation just wants your money. You just have to choose which one will eff you over less.

Hopefully this will have you guys that wanted the Xbox One but turned away to reconsider buying it, but after all this crap, I have a mindset that Microsoft will eff everyone over in the near future.

I will stick to Sony like the last two generations, they have thought about the users from the beginning, not after they have been beaten the shit out in polls, votes, points, reviews, etc. It is a good move FOR them, but I don't doubt they can change it overtime. This makes me less confident about Micro$oft.
However, I still find the PS4 more profitable.

Fixed that for ya.

They looked at the high risk of failure (financial loss) and how sony would come out winning and removed all restrictions*

Fixed that for ya.

But after all PS4 is still better, better specifications and cheaper price, btw if you're MS fan you should be grateful Sony went it and put some pressure on MS otherwise they would have continued.

Your getting it all wrong, people love Xbox and trust me, what xbox has did just proved that companies do listen to their customers and 90% absolutely hated the new Xbox, but now, Xbox fans have a huge smile!

It's not about being weak or strong, its about making sure they will enjoy using it.

lol, the only reason they switched course was ps4 dominated every single poll on the planet.... what else could they do? we knew eventually they would break to consumer demands just not so early. now xbox fans can buy there Xbox's and PS fans will buy there's.
i still wont buy an xbox just because they tried to fuck me over to start with. maybe in 2 years but not at launch. i will give Sony my $$$ first since they are the ones that lead MS to this decision, and eventually MS will get it also.
