So I'm a touch confused, once 4.3 is released we'll be able to unlock 4.2.1 or will the unlock be for 4.3? I'm just trying to confirm because I''ll be purchasing a new iphone 4 around that time.

It'd be great to get a complete jailbreak AND unlock tutorial for 4.3 when it's released.

Looks like he's on version 4.0.1 and has 01.59.00 firmware. If I buy a new phone or a phone on ebay and it is on a version above 4.0.1, is it possible to downgrade it so that i can jailbreak AND unlock the phone?

Hmm you never know, I only know that the unlock will be released for the 4.2.1 basebands for Iphone 4. Unfortunatly for you, iOS 4.3 will include ASLR wich will make it harder for jailbreakers and unlockers. But they might find an exploit, you never know.

Once I have a phone in my hands, will it need to be 'activated' by AT&T in order for me to jailbreak and unlock it?

I'm not verry good with SHSH blobs since I my self never have used them, but I think thats impossible since the jailbreak team just could send out the SHSH blobs, I think they need to have been saved on the phone that you wish to downgrade

Look for an 4.1 and lower first, because they can already be unlocked.

I'm seeing a number of iponhe 4s on ebay that are still on 4.1! when you say it needs to be activated do you mean i just pop my sim from my razr into the iphone or would i actually need to call AT&T to activate it?

So if I purchase an iPhone 4 running 4.1 it is able to be unlocked and jailbroken? Can you recommend a good tutorial for jailbreaking and unlocking iphone 4 on 4.1 or lower?

You need the AT&T card to activate the phone while booting the first time on itunes, but if you buy the already used iphone there's no need for that
