What causing it quite simple not enough space in the RAM for it to process all the items at once. Most likely caused by the XMB needed more resources than it has.

Try deleting all your messages, the game checks them to find if there are game invites which might be causing this.

Let me clarify somewhat on what some people said. It doesn't matter how many friends or messages sent you have. What matters is how many game invites you have in your inbox. When you open the friend's list on MW3 by pressing triangle(ps3) it tries to search through your messages and load all the game invites from the memory of your machine.

my friends with a fat 80 gig ps3 has this same problem and so do I on my 80 gig fat. On my ps3 slim I do not have this problem. I think it depends on the PS3 you have (old/new)

It lags like crap in the Challenges menu as well. Oh the joy of getting a port.
