Facebook’s well-known and somewhat controversial CEO Mark Zuckerberg is apparently in danger of facing the death penalty in Pakistan. A Pakistani lawyer is said to have filed a petition with the court to have charges brought against the CEO and a couple of its co-founders for blasphemy against Muhammad, which is punishable by death in the country. This is over the same “Awesome faceraw Muhammad Day” Facebook Page that got the social network banned in Pakistan and later in Bangladesh.

According to a report by The Register, a lawyer, Muhammad Azhar Siddique, filed a First Information Report (FIR), which is regularly used to launch a criminal investigation. It appears that no charges have been filed so far, but the FIR refers to the Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code, which covers blasphemy against the prophet.

"Use of derogatory remark etc, in respect of the Holy Prophet, whoever by words, either spoken or written, or by visible representation, or by any imputation, innuendo, or insinuation, directly or indirectly, defiles the sacred name of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) shall be punished with death, or imprisonment for life, and shall also be liable for fine," that section reads.

It’s a serious offense, since it’s punishable by death or with prison for life. And if that wasn’t enough, you can also get a fine. Where does it end? The petition for an investigation is for Facebook’s CEO, co-founders Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes and “Andy,” the woman that created the “Awesome faceraw Muhammad” contest.

Apparently, the lawyer that filed the petition says he expects the local police to contact the Interpol and that arrests should be coming soon. That’s a bit optimistic, to say the least. And if you think it’s a bit strange to file charges against the people that run a service that had nothing to do with the actual content, this is a country where ‘insinuated blasphemy’ is punishable by death, so it probably makes perfect sense.

What do you guys think of this?

Good post. Interesting 'story'. I doubt anything will happen to Mark, because he had nothing to do with it. It's basically like... if someone broke a law in England, the prime minister wouldn't then get into trouble, just because it is his country.

Hahaha, wow. I'm cracking up right now. Seriously. That couldn't possibly have ended up being more hypocritical and stereotypical.

Im hating all this hate from you people. Because Im muslim and a pakistani, I don't care it's freedom of speech, but still there's a limit. Ok let's think of it this way yh, what if a guy raped your sister? would you want him dead? yes you would, religion has strict laws. What does somebody know about someone elses life style? Nothing, I get where people are getting the fact of this is extreme and yes it is but don't be stereotypical.

1. I believe you are confusing hate with a love for freedom. I'm going to point out the obvious and boldly say that most of the hate is again in the Muslim camp on this one for threatening the guy.

2. Such limits on freedom of speech are not to be forcibly imposed on other, freer, non-Muslim nations like the US. That would be terrorism by definition, and we are currently at war with terrorism. Ever heard of the first amendment? Blasphemy has always been largely fine until Muslim terrorism. Now political "correctness" (also incompatible with the first amendment), liberalism, the creation of the state of Israel, and Muslim immigration have deemed otherwise.

3. Rape is a physical, violent, and sexual crime. Blasphemy is not a crime. The government is concerned only with legality. Case closed.

4. The laws of religion do not govern the United States of America. First amendment again; it also applies to Islam, my friend. No special privileges for Muslims because of terrorism and radicals.

5. Ideally, all lifestyles that do not directly affect the welfare of others are fine in America, including ones that are not Muslim or that dislike the extreme religious laws of Islam.

6. Stereotyping is also covered by the first amendment, though it is not by NGU, which does not adhere to the first amendment and has double standards regarding religion (Draw Mohammad as opposed to God vs. Fact).
