WARSHIPS patrolled the Sea of Japan and Patriot batteries were set up around Tokyo yesterday as North Korea counted down to a missile launch intended to challenge President Barack Obama as he attends the G20 summit in London. Two Japanese guided-missile destroyers set sail under orders to intercept the Taepodong-2 if the launch goes wrong and it threatens to come down in Japan, a key US ally. North Korea has said any interception would amount to an act of war.

Kim Jong-il, the North Korean dictator, has hinted that if the missile is destroyed, his country will strike back violently, conduct a second nuclear weapons test and ruin years of American disarmament diplomacy.

North Korea, which conducted its first nuclear test in 2006, maintains that the Taepodong-2 is to launch a satellite into space for peaceful purposes. The US and Japan think it is a long-range missile designed for atomic warheads. Experts say the missile could be fired any time from today, although the North Koreans have set a date between April 4 and 8.

The launch has become a test of American power, according to one of the most senior foreign policy advisers in China. The US and Japan “will be bankrupt in reputation and dignity” if the missile violates Japanese sovereignty and is not destroyed, said Professor Zhang Lian-gui, of the Central Party school.

His comments, in an official journal, showed how keenly Chinese leaders were watching Obama’s performance under pressure. Obama will have his first summit with President Hu Jintao in London this week.

American and Chinese ships recently clashed in the South China Sea and the two nations exchanged angry words about a Pentagon report on China’s military build-up. The Chinese have refused to persuade their North Korean ally to call off the launch and are standing back to see how America and its allies deal with it.

The potential for error on both sides is high. The missile’s planned trajectory takes it soaring into space on an arc that leads across Japan. Previous North Korean missiles have exploded in flight or veered off course, and the US antimissile technology has not been perfected. Tokyo’s sophisticated Aegis vessels, the Kongo and the Chokai, which carry SM-3 interceptor missiles, were sent into the seas between the Koreas and Japan yesterday morning.

They will be joined tomorrow by two US Aegis destroyers, the USS John S McCain, skippered by a Korean-American naval officer, and the USS Chaffee. South Korea has sent its own Aegis destroyer, the King Sejong the Great.

On land, Japanese units deployed the latest Pac3 Patriot missile batteries to protect political and financial districts in Tokyo yesterday. The public was asked to stay calm. The Americans are also ready for the risk of a North Korean revenge strike across the border with South Korea.

On February 11, Kim demoted his chief of staff, General Kim Kyok-sik, to command the Fourth Army Corps in a move that may have been a strategic deception.

The corps guards the western coast, a tangle of islands and inlets where the border is disputed and where bloody naval battles between north and south claimed many lives in 1999 and 2002.

The state media announced that the outgoing chief of staff had also lost his seat in “elections” to North Korea’s rubber-stamp parliament. In retrospect, that seemed too simple. North Korea jealously guards its internal secrets and rarely discloses such a fall from favour. It may have been intended to deceive.

Analysts now suspect the “Dear Leader” may have deliberately placed the trusted man he wanted to command the west coast in preparation for another fight. The posting came less than two weeks after North Korea warned that it was scrapping all its accords with the south and would not respect the maritime borderline.

yup probably, but we shouldn't be worried about it until it actually happens, like when russia was supposedly testing us by sending a empty nuclear bomber to dover (as most people from the uk know) but what most of you don't know is that
1. they weren't empty
2. it was more than one
3. the RAF shot nearly all of them down anyway

so really just carry as you were because as usual its probably the media overreacting again

Hmm, wouldnt surprise me, Like Japan will most likely go to war with them seen as though the missiles land in the sea next to them, then i could see America going to war with them too, that would then mean Britain would as well, and im shocked that Russia are against them firing missiles so they could as well. If Britain goes to war, then all the commonwealth would too like Canada and Australia. I think its 16 countries for a world war?
To the guy above, i had no idea about that Russian thing and im from the UK. Good job the RAF are highly trained then.

The Only Krazy
you see now if we would have just killed all of them back in the days of hiroshima the ting tongs wouldn't be here to realise that the only reason we give a shit about them is because they have nukes. And all they are trying to do is look big. And we really couldn't give a shit. Kim Jong Il should go and eat his own shit IMO.

I think its the media overreacting to all this stuff. However People think that the world will end in 2012 due to nuclear bombs falling. All that was predicted by a man called Notradarums* who predicted the 9/11 attacks... So it could happen again.. WW3!

Research the history of North Korea, they act crazy and get aid and money for being crazy. Also if North Korea launched anything at a country they would have the U.S. U.K. South Korea and probably Russia(many more too). So they might drop a bomb but if they drop one they're getting a lot back at them. And Samba, Obama would have no choice if we got bombed or threatened.

Well. Going down the list of half-retarded banana posts. I'll start off by saying.

North Korea is led by one of the craziest dictators ever.

Also, don't underestimate Korea. They actually have the largest man force, or close to it apart from pre-war-Iraq, of any country.. Other than China. I think that's right. But remember. World War II was started by a bankrupt, half-dead, war-stricken, and hungry country stuck between all the countries that it was enemies with. We saw how that turned out - they raped all of Europe before the UK, Russia, and the US all came to save it. Germany at the time didn't have even close to the highest manpower of any other country, North Korea does.

Also, with the threat of Nukes, unlike what people think above, won't do a single thing. By nuking North Korea, you're going to piss off Vietnam and China along with a couple other neighbors. It's not like "Nuclear Fall Out" is an invention made to scare people - it actually exists and does kill people. If you nuke North Korea, you're going to pick a fight with China.. who has the largest man power of all of the world. Of course, between China and North Korea, who knows which side China will truly go on. Economics wise, China is stuck with the US. Ideology wise, they are stuck with North Korea. There won't be any nukes launched. North Korea has some strategic value in its placement and its abilities, but none that could really go overseas and blow up some of America. It's just not possible at this point for Korea, but they are stepping closer and closer to that ability, which has got the world kind of scared, by the world, I mean the United States. Russia's been in the targets of North Korea forever. They could have been hit by their missles almost decades ago. It never happened, but we don't want it to happen. That's why Russia's against it. If not, more-so than the Americans are because as Americans are doing it as a precautionary measure, Russia is doing it because they are already in the targets and able to be attacked.

Obama not letting it happen -> Obama is a pacifist of sorts, and hell, I'm banking on calling him a half-retarded banana FDR who is shit crazy about the bank fallout to the point that he's driving all of the US down with it in order to bring all of us back up. But remember, he's succeeding a military-banana named George Bush, who I didn't vote for in either election, who pretty much laid out the chips as he saw fit for Obama. Obama will take military action if needed, and will more than likely take military action seeing as how his Department of Defense is the same one from the Bush years - a half-retarded, war-crazy banana.

War isn't stupid. It's still going on. You can turn your back on it, but there's a couple wars that are still raging at this very point in time. We have the technology to be able to pretty much lose only a couple thousand to their hundred thousand, but it won't prevent war from happening. Remember, dynamite was invented to make wars too bloody to fight - it only made Nobel the richest man on Earth and didn't do anything to stop any wars.

As far as that empty Nuclear Bomber story goes, I've never heard about it. It's a bit sketchy just reading it, since Russia would have seen that as an act of war - It's not like they just crank out Nukes by the second anymore - and an expensive one at that since their 'Nuclear Bombers' which are, I forget, but basically your B52 bombers of the United States on steroids. The only thing that has so far pissed off Russia about Britain is that nuclear defense system to protect all of Europe from Iran.. which then ultimately makes Russia incapable of attacking Europe, need-be.
