If there were to be any correlation I'd expect the number of rapes committed to drop significantly as a safer & legal option arose.
No worries of the prostitutes being raped given that a) if there was a rapist about he wouldn't go after a prostitute and b) if it were legal it could be setup more like how it is in Holland. Don't they have some sort of protection there?
Yes they do. The red light districts are patrolled by police and under constant CCTV. Hash cafés, casinos, 24 hour night clubs, strip clubs, and brothels have to, by law, be placed in a designated red light district (actually hash cafés don't have to, but usually choose to in order to avoid complaints). I like this law because it means anyone who finds gambling, heavy drinking or the sex trade offensive can easily avoid it. The red light districts literally replace the standard orange/yellow street lights with red street lights and the doors all have a red strip light on them, so you always know you're entering that kind of area. Any brothel or club will have there own doormen and security, and any large city (especially Amsterdam) has a police station specifically for the red light district so they can respond quickly. The only places that occationally don't have security in the RLD would be porn shops, tattoo parlours, sex toy shops, etc. which are all fairly popular (not quite sure why tattoo parlours are common in the RLD but they are apparently).
