With all of the talk of Billions vs Trillions its hard to comprehend how much money the US is in Debt.
Here is a graphic of the current 16 Trillion Dollar debt limit( a number that has to be raised every year), Remember that we are talking stacks of 100 dollar bills, each pallet represents 100 million dollars. Obama has added nearly 6 trillion to that deficit in the last 4 years, But pictures can speak louder than words.

So Obama only accounted for the left wall in this picture :p
As far as who owns our debt, China accounts for the first stack on the left, Japan owns the second stack,(each owns just over 1 trillion in US treasury notes) The third stack is owned by all the rest of the countries in the world( both England and Russia own about 150 billion each)
Who owns the other 13 trillion???
US citizens have the responsiblity to pay off that amount of debt through taxation!!
And you thought your credit card balance was getting out of control

For some other perspective, all of the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy is estimated to cost about 20 to 30 billion dollars.
That is roughly the amount of the top 2 rows on the short stack at the bottom of the picture
Our Debt is 53 times the number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy, and if we had 8 more stacks of a trillion ( or leave Obama in office another 4 years)we can equal the number of miles it would take to get to the next closest star a mere 4.24 light years or roughly 25 trillion miles away
