Sonia Alfano's father was murdered by the Mafia in 1993 when she was at University, and has since campaigned on behalf of the relatives of those who've suffered at the hands of Italian organised crime.

Alfano, president of the Italian association for the families of Mafia victims - Familiari Vittime di Mafia, said yesterday:

It really, really hurts, we can't allow this to happen, the wounds are still too fresh.

Alfano appealed last week to the European Commission, calling for the game to be banned, which has a rank-up system within a mob in 'Empire Bay', a fictional New York.

Alan Lewis of Take-Two, defended the game:

Mafia II tells a compelling story about organised crime in America - a subject that for decades has been featured in award-winning movies, television shows and novels such as The Godfather and The Sopranos. We fully and completely stand behind our creative teams and products, including Mafia II.

The only people who ever campaign against video games and fail to see the similarities to how harmless movies are people who have quite simply never sat down w/ a controller in their life.

Give it 50 years, once gaming is more common amongst old people(lol) this **** will stop.

This is exactly like the medal of honour thread. So many movies and tv shows have been made on this topic. It is a joke, why not ban them. Seriously do these people want to stay in power, with the next generation of voters being bought up with video games you do not need to be a rocket scientist to know what will happen there.

wow she could just not play the game , its not like the game is in her face the whole time. Whilst there at it for balance they would need to ban every mafia referenced movie in history . Thats a lot of paperwork! Idiots!

Sorry, no offense to any europeans but, they already forced the makers of Medal of Honor to changed the taliban name to something else, and it was just a few letters, why would they want to ban Mafia II now? It's a great game.
