Activision CEO Sees Call of Duty as a Form of Social Media

Earlier this week Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick had an interview with CNN where he noted that "more people play Black Ops, daily, than watch the late night hosts Leno, Letterman and Fallon, combined".

That doesn't seem like much of an accomplishment though, seeing how big a phenomenon the Call of Duty franchise is. But that wasn't the only thing he compared the COD to. He then went on to compare the shooter to Facebook and text messaging, in terms of cultural relevance.

"The audience of 'Call of Duty' is probably greater in terms of size than in any other interactive form of entertainment," Kotick told CNN. "If you look at the 500 million people who are on Facebook and the way that people text each other and instant message and use video chat, there is now an evolution of media. Those are the characteristics and attributes that a generation and audiences feel are very important to their media and entertainment experiences."

CNN said Kotick believes the Call of Duty franchise delivers on that trend through its online multiplayer.

Towards the end of the interview Kotick couldn't resist taking a shot at Infinity Ward even though the founders were fired and they're facing a hefty lawsuit the studio still belongs to Activision.

"Multiplayer has been largely developed by Treyarch," Kotick asserted. "I don't think Treyarch got their due for how much they contributed in the production and polish to the multiplayer."

I disagree, CoD4 was good, CoD5 was great, story was boring, MW2 sucked and Black Ops is ****ing awesome, not to mention treyarch added some things which were brought into MW2, mainly the dramatic things from campaign. (Notice how CoD4 has less drama and violence in Campaign than W@W, then notice how MW2 has more)

They would be no cod without IW. End of.

You are correct there, I just did research on who made the first CoD game, you are correct, however I think treyarch made some improvements on the series, they have more checks and balances in their games, less overpowered perks and weapons, however if there is a MW3 i think IW will do a better job

IW couldn't fix MW2 because it all went pear shaped when the two bosses got fired that was just before everyone started complaining about one man army and commando.. there was nobody there to take any decisions so none got made.

If one man army at least was nerfed most would still be playing the game today which is a shame really.

Yes that is true. If I remember correctly they were planning on making One man army not replenish your noobtubes and there was going to be map pack 3 but everything went downhill.

The pictures for MP3 are already in the game.. Would have been shipment, vertigo, oilrig and gulag.

I don't know what it is with Black Ops but it just doesn't have that feeling what other CODs had to make you keep playing them.

I agree, but I didn't have a problem with commando, as the melee time got extended. (I tested it with tactical knife with a friend) So if you didn't have commando you still had an advantage, noobtubes pissed me off, one man army was cool with me for refilling the stinger or something like that, but not nade launchers

Commando is the worst perk in the world, but COD wouldn't be COD without the innovation IW brought to the table. MW1 is still the most ballanced COD game. There seriously are not any big downfalls to it. I played it legit for 15 days played time and it never had anything wrong with it. Everything was even, and had it's advantages. And the good thing about it was there wasn't much to it but it was just so amazing. It didn't have many guns, but it surely was fun as hell.

No, no its not the most balanced COD game.
It was good, really good, probably the best but not the most balanced.
Juggernaut and Stopping power, as well as the usual guns.

Black Ops is the most balanced COD. Even a Infinity Ward fanboy has to admit that.
